About TOMMI

The TOMMI children's software award is the most important award in Germany for digital games and educational programs for children.
Since 2002 the TOMMI award has been given at the Frankfurt Book Fair to the most innovative and outstanding software titles developed specifically for children in the categories PC, Consoles, Apps, Electronic Toys, Educational Software and also in the special category Kindergarten & Preschool.

The TOMMI relies on the participation and participation of children between the ages of six and 16. On average, between 3,000 and 4,000 girls and boys actively participate in the award process. In 2021 around 1600 children were able to participate during the pandemic.

The TOMMI aims to teach children and school classes how to critically use computer-, educational- and console games as well as apps and helps promote media literacy in children.

The TOMMI strengthens children's understanding of democracy, as they deal with other opinions in the test phase and also formulate their arguments in writing.

Publishers of apps, PC, console games as well as electronic toys and digital educational offers submit their games online here.

A jury of well-known specialist journalists (Der Spiegel, FAZ, BILD.DE, and many more), renowned media educators and education experts select the nominations. Then children in around 20 libraries all over Germany and Switzerland have their turn.

In 2019, a total of 3,300 girls and boys took part in the award. The TOMMI was awarded at the Frankfurt Book Fair until 2019.

In 2020, the award ceremony took place for the first time live as part of the “Timster” program at KiKa from ARD and ZDF, both on TV and on the Internet.

This year the TOMMI will be awarded live on October 23th, 2022 at KiKA in “Team Timster”.
During the corona pandemic, around 1600 children across Germany were able to test games and educational software nominated by an expert jury in around 20 libraries under strict security measures and with a well thought-out hygiene concept.

The application process for games and other digital products usually starts in June / July. The test phase in the libraries takes place between September or October.

The award ceremony is on October 23th, 2022 in the KiKA in the media broadcast "Team Timster".

Public libraries have long been leaders in education when it comes to teaching a wide variety of reading skills. This applies not only to books, but also to electronic media and games. Libraries offer the place, the games and equipment and, above all, competent staff.

Libraries are also a democratic institution: they give children access to new media, like computers, consoles or tablets, that they otherwise may not be able to afford.

In the special category “Kindergarten & Preschool”, Prof. Dr. Stefan Aufenanger from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and his team assess submissions to kindergartens.

As a publisher, you can indicate participation in this category in the registration form.

Submittable are Apps, electronic toys, PC and console games, educational software or products for the special price kindergarten & preschool. The age category is USK 12. 

Eligible to participate are all products that were released between October 16, 2021 to October 24, 2022 and are still available until December 31, 2022.

The requirements are 20 games or codes per title, as well as the completed online registration form. The submitted games remain with the specialist jury.

The TOMMI award is awarded by children media specialist FEIBEL.DE (Berlin). This year the awards have been sponsored and supported by Auerbach Stiftung, the German Library Association dbv, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Familie & Co, the Frankfurt Book Fair, Gaming ohne Grenzen, the German broadcaster KiKA, Partner & Söhne and the german broadcaster ZDF.
